A great little course!

Mountain Experience were delighted to award Gayle M. with a Silver National Navigation Award over the weekend. For various reasons, what should have been a full course was gradually whittled right down to just one candidate. Not to be put off, Gayle benefited from one to one tuition and delivered a creditable performance over the two days.

“The clear instruction and presentation was fun! Nigel is very knowledgeable and makes learning easy.” said Gayle. “I would gladly recommend this course to anyone wishing to develop their skills.”

Winter Training for Mountain Experience staff

Nigel Lewis attended a week’s training in Norway as part of his International Mountain Leader course.

As well as spending every day snowshoe walking on the Hardangervidda plateau, the course included practical instruction on avalanche avoidance and snow appreciation, rescue scenarios, snow shelter construction, protecting clients on steep ground including snow anchors and step cutting, and of course lots of environmental appreciation.

The course was delivered by Plas Y Brenin, and it was the first time it has ever been held in Norway.

Straight after the course, Nigel was putting his new found knowledge into practice with a winter ascent of Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa’s Atlas Mountains.  The week long trip was part of a training package delivered by the leading company “World Challenge”  and Nigel joined other youth leaders for a series of scenario based exercises that were woven throughout the expedition.

Mountain experience are pleased to announce that four clients successfully achieved the National Navigation Award Scheme’s Silver Award. They all showed their ability to navigate safely across mountainous terrain and had a really good time doing so! Day one had some really mixed weather and day two was a real reward with a big sky and great views. The two days involved building on skills they already had and learning a few new tips and tricks to make navigation that much accurate and easier.

The whole experience was summed up when John M said, “The two days have been brilliant!”

Congrats to Nigel Lewis who has just passed his Speed Navigation Test as part of the International Mountain Leader Award. The test consisted of navigating to marker flags spread over the side of Moel Siabod in Snowdonia. He was allowed a time of 2 hours 43 minutes and was delighted to romp home with 50 minutes to spare. Congratulations also to all the other aspirant leaders who passed on the same day.

6 pass Silver Navigation Award in harsh weather!

Six members of South Wales Mountaineering Club undertook their Silver National Navigation Award this weekend, in really testing conditions.

The group quickly put their skills to the test as the visibility changed from distant views of the English coastline to just a few dozen metres at most! Over the two days, they demonstrated that they could safely plan routes in open country, and navigate to them with pinpoint accuracy.

Following the course, Cari E said, “I Just wanted to say thank you again for a really great course this weekend. I feel like I’ve brushed up well on bits I knew as well as learning quite a few new tools and techniques. The best thing about the course was being able to put all we have learned into practice – in really harsh conditions!”

The next Silver course will be running on the weekend of 7th and 8th December and there just a few places left.

So why should I go for a walk?

Most of us instinctively know that “going for a walk” is a good way to clear your head, chill out or just have a pleasant day in some nice surroundings.

But if that weren’t enough, the BMC have brought together some scientific data that should convince even the lardiest couch potato that they really ought to get out of the house and onto their feet.

National Navigation Award Scheme

Would you like something with an award at the end of it? Maybe you’re already doing something like a DofE award and you want some navigation training to compliment it? Mountain Experience are registered to train and assess the National Navigation Award Scheme.

The path is easy if you know what you're doing!

The path is easy if you know what you’re doing!

Complete beginners, as well as those more experienced in navigation, can undertake either the Bronze or Silver Award. Further your knowledge and understanding of not only the science, but more importantly, the art of navigation.

The training and assessment can take place over a single weekend and there will be a maximum of 6 students.

You can enter at either level, with the Bronze Award being appropriate for those who want the confidence to plan and follow routes using paths and tracks. The higher award is more suitable for those who want to get off the beaten track.

11 four thousanders in 5 days!

Nigel Lewis of Mountain Experience, together with Steven Kedward, have just successfully  summited 11 peaks over 4,000 metres high. The traverse of the Monte Rosa massif in the Valais Alps took a long 5 days and left both men grinning like Cheshire Cats! Their route saw them criss cross the border between Switzerland and Italy, moving between high mountain huts as they approached their final peak, the mighty Dufourspitze.
